Merchants are required to pay credit card processing fees in order to accept credit card payments from their customers. These fees include:

Interchange fees

These are the fees that the credit card issuer (such as Visa, Mastercard, or American Express) charges for each transaction. Interchange fees are based on the credit card brand, the type of transaction (such as online or in-store), and the merchant category code (MCC), which is a four-digit number that classifies the type of business. Interchange fees typically range from 1.15% + $0.05 to 2.50% + $0.10 per transaction.

Assessment fees

These are the fees that the credit card network (such as Visa, Mastercard, or Discover) charges for each transaction. Assessment fees are based on the monthly sales volume of the merchant and are usually fixed at 0.14% to 0.17% per transaction.

Processing fees

These are the fees that the payment processor (such as PayPal, Square, or Stripe) charges for each transaction. Processing fees cover the cost of facilitating the transaction, providing customer service, and maintaining security standards. Processing fees can vary depending on the payment processor and the plan that the merchant chooses. Processing fees can include monthly fees, per-transaction fees, equipment lease fees, and statement fees.

The average credit card processing fees for merchants range from 1.3% to 3.5% of each transaction, depending on the factors mentioned above.
